Guy Hoffman was born on May 20, 1954 and is a Milwaukee-area
native. He attended high school in the nearby town of Shorewood,
where he played on the football team and was in the school
band. His first public performances were in such diverse locations
as the Lake Bluff Grade School little theater, a Jewish bar
mitzvah, Shorewood High School youth center, teen bars/strip
joints, an Eastside bookstore, the UW Milwaukee ballroom,
and assorted bars and clubs. His first professional gig was
in 1974 on Milwaukee's Summerfest Schlitz Stage performing
with the group Split Rock. Guy's musical influences include
the original British invasion, Jim Keltner, Ringo Starr, Keith
Moon and Charlie Watts.
In 1980 and 1981 , at the time
the V.F. was just getting started, Guy was in a popular Milwaukee
band called the Oil Tasters, along with Caleb Lentzner (who
went on to become the soundman for the V.F.) Guy first found
acclaim drumming in the band the BoDeans.
In 1993, when Victor decided to leave the Violent Femmes,
Gordon and Brian immediately thought of Guy, with whom
they'd been friends since before the band formed. They
didn't need to audition anyone else. While Guy is a
talented drummer in his own right, he says he made an
effort to play the older VF tunes exactly the way Victor
used to, for the sake of the fans.
In the late 90's, Guy concurrently played in the band
Absinthe, the solo project of Sammy Llanas of the BoDeans.
The rest of the Femmes then reunited with original drummer
Victor. Guy is currently with the band Radio Romeo and
is very excited about this project. Check them out at
